November 2017, Saint Louis, Missouri
I couldn’t imagine to be here this morning. I’m in a back room in a West Saint Louis bar and I watch a poetry contest. Ten cellphone lights surrounded the candidate, in a few minutes, it’s my turn to go on stage.
Twisted Poet is the party M.C. . This former Saint Louis thug has been discover poetry and haikus in prison, that art begun a daily therapy. Now he’s sharing his experience on the Saint Louis stage to put light on this art.
Neighborhood succeed and rejecte each other. Delmar boulevard split two worlds. The white rich neighborhood at south and the black poor at the north. The frontier is a abandoned houses belt since the 2008 crisis.
The afro-american community is the most important in Saint Louis, close to be the half of the population (49,1% in 2010)[1]. This kind of event strengthen the community links. On walls we can see some black figures on each of works.

Whodi is the best performer that night, her scenic sens and her rhythm are captivating.
In despite the electricity cut, that performer keep recite her text that she’s reading on her phone. A lot of young women involve at these parties. They are talking about the relations with men, the maternity, poverty and the hope to leave the neighborhood.
The neighbors come watch the performance with their fried chicken dish. The social reinforcement is very efficient in these parties. The transgenerational issues are addressed. The winner of the haikus contest earns fifty dollars, my performance wasn’t retained.
